Video Games as Art

The days of a Graphic Designer designing only for print died somewhere between the invention of the Computer, and the rapid uptake of Internet adoption. This has taught designers that they need to be flexible and able to adapt to the ever-changing media landscape. Designers have to be modern-day Renaissance Men, who are creative in many art forms whether they are physical or digital.

Designers need to draw inspiration from various facets of life from the spirals of a seashell to the colours of peacock’s feathers. However, just like musicians designers mainly draw inspiration from other artists and are always on the lookout for the latest source of inspiration.

Our latest inspiration comes from the latest media to be official considered an art form, but which has been around for over 30 years. You guessed it, video games. While in the past videogames were confined to arcades and mouth-breathing nerd dungeons, they are now the future of design.

Video games as a medium incorporate visual & auditory design, personal interaction and more recently a push for social interaction. No other form (except perhaps the internet) can offer all these things in one package. We see them as a future that has already arrived.

If you are not convinced at their validity as medium, you have only to look at the USD $11.7 billion the video game industry took in 2008. With games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops taking in USD$650 million of sales in the game's first five days.
